There’s a new Academy in down, and it’s run by Girls.
Deep breath, all together now. Get your Beyonce On: “Girls! We Run the World, Girls…”
SO. The Girl Geek Academy Launch Party last week. (That’s ‘The Girl Geek Academy’, as opposed to ‘The Geek Girl Academy’).
I’ve even signed up to teach! YES! They let people do things like that too. I’m sure it will be stacks of fun. It’s such a great concept – The first female-founded global learning academy for girl geek hackers, hustlers, and hipsters.
The Academy will be running design, branding, making (as in 3d printing, and robotics), game design and development, web design and development and other courses for women.
The events will be run pretty regularly, and the first few sessions for branding, pitching, and a whole weekend for 3D printing and robotics are already being planned.
I first met these girls in March when Tammy and April hosted their first all female hackathon – SheHacks, and a few weeks later at the Startup Weekend Women Melbourne event which was a startup weekend event specifically for women.
At these events, pizza and coke were swapped out for grown up, yummy food and beautiful drinks, accompanied by meditation and yoga classes.
Because you know, that’s how we women roll!
I’ve gotten to know quite a few of the women in the Melbourne tech scene at various events over the last few months, and I loved seeing so many familiar faces at the launch party. It still amazes me when I think of how large this startup underbelly is in Melbourne. There were so many people making something out of nothing out there, every single day.
